Accounting Management Solutions Offers Rule 17 Compliance Assessment

WALTHAM, Mass. – December 15, 2009 - Accounting Management Solutions, Inc. (AMS), a leading provider of outsourced accounting, financial management, and consulting services for private, public, and nonprofit organizations, today announced the availability of a new service for Massachusetts organizations who maintain personal information. In partnership with Tech Networks of Boston, a Boston-based, nationally-recognized leader in the field of sustainable IT and IT security, AMS is offering a Rule 17 Assessment which provides a comprehensive report:

  • Educating the organization on Rule 17
  • Identifying the organization’s areas of risk and liability, including specific legal and compliance issues
  • Providing a clear remediation plan, including creation of policies and staff training
  • Providing a written (legally required) IT and physical security program

Organizations must develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive security program for any records containing personal information. The new Massachusetts Rule 17.03 and 17.04 define protected information as containing first and last name or first initial and last name with a Social Security number, driver’s license number, state identification number, financial account number or credit or debit card number. Fines for non-compliances range from $5000-$15,000 per infraction. Compliance must be achieved by March 1, 2010.
