New Massachusetts laws, Rules 17.03 and 17.04 (collectively known as Rule 17), require certain information to be encrypted or stored in a secure location. Rule 17 went into effect on March 1, 2010.

Rule 17 is relevant if you do business in Massachusetts and maintain the following records containing a first and last name or first initial and last name with:

  • A Social Security number
  • A driver's license or state identification number
  • A financial account number or credit/debit card number
